Camping and a little fishing

Myself and Austin went and got our campsite thursday morning. we didn't get the one we were eye balling the day before but it all worked out. the rest of the family was not due in till friday night so it was just the 2 of us until then. i was just happy to get him off the computer and xbox game for a few days and was surprised that he actually had fun out there in the woods and all. once we got the tents set up we set up a couple of chairs in the river and sat in the nice cold water with some nice cold beverages for a bit, then as i watched the river, i started to see a couple of fish rising. i grabbed my rod which was already rigged up and plopped a  tandem dry rig and pulled one of them risers to shore. the others i could not even get to move. the next day at around noon i wanted to fish a small but reliable section so we drove down river and hit the water. i started off with a couple of 13" range browns on a tan/pink hopper and then couldn't hardly even move a fish after that. after a bit i found out why the fishing was sucking so bad, we caught up to a couple of different anglers. i was surprised and pissed as i've never seen another soul fishing that stretch before. austin was having fun swimming in all the holes behind me as i was done fishing them but when i suggested we try somewhere else to fish/swim he was not feeling it so we just went back to camp and soaked up the sun while perched in our chairs in the river. each evening after that i would see a riser or 2 at our camp but i couldn't work any magic.

Dbone and his boy Drake

I got a chance to fish with dbone (again) and meet his son drake. drake is a good kid who is still learning the ropes of fly fishing. his skillz are still in the beginning stages but he can still catch fish so he's doin alright. once again we had anticipated a stellar day but it fell short of our pre-mature expectations, at least my expectations, but mine i think are usually higher then they should be. streamers again were pretty unproductive been  dries got quite a bit of love. drake was catching a few on a tan hopper and me and dbone were having decent success with a deer hair caddis. the caddis pulled 2 real nice fish and a fair amount of other fish. today was a good mix of browns and cutts. i think cutties always provide some extra bonus points. today was a good mix of stones, green drakes and caddis popping off. just like yesterday the wind wrecked havoc on us, which is especially brutal when throwing a tandom rig. it was nice to see drake land some fish, but i feel it's always nice when the kids are properly entertained like that.

A Little Entertainment

Was gonna stay at home today since i'm still feeling like shit, but i gotta call from dbone so off i went. we got to the river bout 10am and started throwing streamers. streamers were a bit slow and around 1ish once the green drakes and stones along with the caddis starting coming off we switched to dries. the dry fishing wasn't as good as projected but it was good enough to keep us entertained. mostly small fish with a few decent ones mixed in and a few bigger ones lost. seems like around 2pm a storm was making it's way to us and the wind really picked up. we called it a day at around 3pm and made our way out.

Sick or Not..........

The clan had plans to go camping tonight thru sunday but myself and michelle became sick last night so michelle was not up for camping, neither was i but i still would've gone. scott had sent me an invite to fish with him today, earlier in the week, but the family had plans so i declined, but with the camping canceled i took scott up on his invite. unless i'm throwing up i'm always down for some fishing. when we reached our water of choice the cicadas were in full serenade, which changed my mind from starting with streamers to throwing on a sgt slaughter in cicada colors. i got a few rises to the cicada but no hook-ups. i don't know if the fish weren't quite committed or if my timing was a little off on setting a dry fly. scott was throwing meat with any sort of love. there were quite a few golden stones chillin in the grass and bushes and saw some dancing on the water but did not see a single rise at them. i had contemplated throwing a stone dry but with the lack of interest the fish were showing in them i chose to go with a purple haze instead. that decision was the one to get me off the shnide. while i only landed 2 fish, scott went from streamers, nymphs, to dries, to streamers again with no luck. i eventually switched to streamers as well and between the 2 of us we could only get a few chasers.

Back on the Slope

I took boy wonder jr. (step-son) out for some fly fishing training to a favorite fall lake. unfortunately the lake was pretty full which brought the shoreline right against the trees. i should've known better but figured with the low snow pack that the lake might've been a bit lower. during the fall obviously the lake is quite low which provides ample casting room. we did the best we could and need less to say he still needs a lot of work. unfortunately he is easily discouraged but hopefully he will try and stick with it. we didn't spend much time there as the optimism wasn't there either. we drove around and only i ended up fishing a couple of small rivers. he lost interest. between 3 different pieces of water i muster a handful of small brookies and a small grayling on an olive bugger and then switched small dries on the last piece of moisture but could only conjure a handful of small cutties. it was enjoyable for the most part none the less.
